How Do Portable Monitors Transmit Video Signals?
The main reason for the "No Signal" message on your display is an indication that your monitor is not communicating with your video source device. The device can be a laptop, a gaming console, a Nintendo Switch, or a smartphone.
While not strictly necessary, understanding how data is transmitted from your device to your portable monitor can play an important role in identifying and resolving the issue.
Types of Data Connectivity Ports on Portable Monitors
A portable monitor transmits data via ports that connect to a notebook, smartphone, or a device that outputs video signals.
Today's portable monitors are equipped with various ports, each serving a different function. With the right monitor, you can enjoy an incredibly smooth media streaming experience, whether you're listening to music, watching videos, or playing games. Most modern portable monitors transmit video and audio signals via DisplayPort, HDMI, or USB-C.
The choice of the correct port type largely depends on your requirements and is crucial if you want a smooth, seamless viewing experience.
HDMI Port
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) has established itself as the standard in home entertainment and can be found in all major brands of televisions, Blu-ray players, video game systems, and home theaters.
It allows you to transmit uncompressed video, audio, and even data over a single cable. It is the standard for HD quality streaming and has been adopted by most leading companies in the media industry.
While most of us assume there is only one type of HDMI cable, that is far from the truth. There are four types of HDMI cables. However, the most commonly used standard for portable monitors is the standard HDMI, which is often used for displays with resolutions up to 1080p.
Portable monitors with higher resolutions, such as 4K, use HDMI High Speed. This type of HDMI is considered a fast transmission connection that can handle transmission speeds of up to 10.2 Gbps.
Next on the list is HDMI Premium High Speed, commonly used for HDR-enabled portable monitors. You'll find this HDMI on Lenovo ThinkVision M14 and UPERFECT S devices released in 2020.
If you are lucky enough to own an 8K portable monitor, you should know that it uses HDMI Ultra High Speed for data transmission. This type of HDMI supports uncompressed video data at speeds of up to 48 Gbps.
In addition to standard, there are also three different HDMI shapes: standard HDMI connector, Mini HDMI connector, and Micro HDMI connector. The Mini HDMI connector is most commonly used in portable monitors due to its slim design.
DisplayPort
Just like HDMI, DisplayPort does not support power transfer to a portable display and is therefore specifically used for transmitting video signals. It was introduced in 2008 and is often found on premium mobile monitors. Therefore, it is primarily reserved for transmitting high data speeds, such as when gaming or editing videos. In general, it is ideal for handling high-intensity tasks.
There are currently three types of DisplayPort. DisplayPort 1.2 is the entry-level model and supports screen resolutions of 3840p or 4K and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Most portable monitors have this type of DP in a smaller size, called Mini DisplayPort or Mini DP.
DisplayPort 1.3 is often used to transmit 8K video resolutions with a refresh rate of 30 Hz. A portable screen with an 8K resolution, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and HDR support often has DisplayPort 1.4. It is the fastest and can support the highest graphics settings, such as when playing high-quality modern games.
USB-C
USB Type C, often called USB-C or Type-C, is one of the best things that ever happened to the world of data transfer. That's because it's capable of transmitting high-speed data and power simultaneously when it comes to USB 3.1 or higher, also known as full-featured Type-C. Most modern portable monitors have at least two USB-C ports instead of DisplayPort and HDMI.
USB-C is known for its great versatility because it is reversible; you can plug it in any direction and it will still work. Because of this great advantage, USB-C ports make it easier to use portable monitors with your laptop, tablet, smartphone, and gaming console.
Now that we understand how portable monitors receive data from input devices, let's turn our attention to connecting your portable monitor to your laptop.
How to Connect Your Portable Monitor to a Laptop
Sometimes the "No Signal" issue can be due to improper connection of an external monitor to your device. Although portable monitors can be connected to devices other than laptops, we will use the latter as the standard. Once you get the hang of it, you can connect it to any other device.
USB-C to USB-C Connection
If you want to connect your portable monitor to a video output device easily, the USB-C to USB-C connection is the best solution. This connection only requires a single cable to transmit video signals and power simultaneously.
The USB-C to USB-C connection is ideal for connecting your laptop, Android, or Apple device to your second monitor. Make sure your notebook has a Thunderbolt 3.0 standard or higher, or USB Type-C 3.1 or higher. You can contact your device provider for assistance or check our model list here if you don't know.
Most current portable monitors often include the USB-C to USB-C cable. Connect it to the correct Type-C port on the monitor, as sometimes a Type-C port is only for power and is labeled as a PD port.
If you have made your connections correctly, your portable monitor's power indicator is green, and the "No Display" message is still displayed, you should proceed with troubleshooting.
Connecting via Mini-HDMI, HDMI, or DisplayPort
If your laptop does not have a Thunderbolt or USB-C port, you can transmit video signals via Mini-HDMI, HDMI, or DisplayPort, depending on the ports available on the second portable screen. Remember to power the device from an outlet if your portable display does not have a built-in battery.

As mentioned earlier, the reasons why a monitor doesn't work as required can be due to it not responding or the second monitor not being recognized.
If your portable monitor is unresponsive, it means the display is black as if it were not connected to your laptop (when using a wired connection) or had no power source. In such a case, the power indicator LED is usually off. The simplest solution is to ensure that the device is connected to your device (when using a wired connection) or to a power outlet.
Portable Monitor Is Not Receiving Power
Before we delve into troubleshooting, the problem of an unresponsive mobile monitor could be related to power consumption. First, check if your monitor is receiving power. Luckily, it's quite easy to check this with portable screens.
For a monitor that uses USB-C for power, make sure it is connected to the charger and the power indicator is green to indicate that it is receiving power. If not, no light will be on. For a battery-powered monitor, make sure the battery is fully charged before connecting it.

Below are some of the main causes of the "No Signal" response on a portable monitor and how to resolve them.
Port Compatibility Issues
As mentioned earlier, portable monitors connect to devices via USB Type C, HDMI, and other ports. If you are connecting a laptop via USB-C with a cable, make sure you have Thunderbolt 3 or higher, or USB-C 3.1 or higher.
If you are using a smartphone to connect to your portable monitor, make sure it has USB-C 3.1 or higher. USB 3.1 ports are improved USB ports that can transfer both power and data. Most modern smartphones have USB-C ports, but only a few have video output capabilities. Phone brands that have upgraded the Type-C port to full functionality are primarily found in the Samsung Galaxy series, Huawei Mate series, and OnePlus.
Many users use the second external screen on computers and PCs. If the device has not yet been upgraded to an HDMI port for video output, they will need to convert VGA or DVI to HDMI. In this case, make sure your adapter supports VGA to HDMI compatibility, as some adapters only offer one-way connectivity, HDMI to VGA.
You may also see the "No Signal" message if you try to connect your portable display to a Nintendo Switch console via a USB-C to USB-C cable. In such a case, make sure the monitor is powered by the Switch charger, not the monitor's charger. If you want a more stable connection, you can use the HDMI port of the Switch dock.

Another cause of low power supply can also be higher power requirements. External laptop monitors with high resolutions like 4K or larger sizes like 17.3 inches require more power consumption than a device can provide.
In these cases, we recommend opting for a portable monitor with an internal battery or external power input. However, if you can't find an outlet, a power bank can also work.
Normally, portable 1080p monitors require a power supply of 5V and 2A when connected to a laptop. You can choose a Power Delivery (PD) power bank to provide the necessary power via a smartphone. For a monitor with 4K resolution, you need to connect it to a PD power bank to meet the minimum requirements to support the power.
Incorrect Display Settings
Computer monitors may have the appropriate settings from the factory to support plug-and-play. The most likely cause is that the auto-search function is not enabled, and the monitor may need to be directed to the input signal source.
Select your monitor's control panel and locate the input signal source to set it correctly. Note that you will need to change the setting if you used a USB-C connection during your last session and are using HDMI in your next session.

Your PC will automatically download them and schedule a time for installation. If you haven't restarted your PC for a long time and receive a notification that updates are pending, a restart can help.
In addition to a restart, you can also manually check for updates. To do this:
Go to Windows Settings -> Updates & Security.
Select the "Windows Update" option to check for pending updates.
If none are listed, click the "Check for updates" button.
When you run the Windows Update check, you cannot select the updates to install. However, the operating system selects the necessary updates and installs them for you.

Updating the Graphics Driver on a MacBook
Mac OS usually has an integrated graphics driver. This means that you cannot just install a graphics driver update, but must update the entire operating system. To do this:
· Click the Apple logo to open the menu.
· Click the "Software Update" option.
· Mac OS will indicate if updates are available that need to be installed. If a graphics driver update is available, it will be included as part of the operating system update.

Faulty Connection Cables
Sometimes the problem might be with your connection cables. After prolonged use, a cable might become loose when connected to a USB port. You can try wiggling it while still connected to the port to see if your screen lights up.
If that doesn't work, your next step is to try testing the cables. Test the USB-C and HDMI cables on different laptops and portable monitors. If they all fail, you might want to replace them. Alternatively, you can use an Android app called USBCheck to determine if a USB-C cable is working or not.
Faulty Portable Monitor Ports
