List of Smartphones with DisplayPort Alt Mode

Since Android and the now-discontinued Windows 10 Mobile are mobile operating systems, most manufacturers do not support wired video output. Even if support is available, it may not be clearly stated in a device's specification list.

All iOS devices (iPhone 4 and later, iPod touch 4th generation and later, iPad 1st generation and later) support wired video output. iOS devices, which traditionally use neither Micro-USB nor USB-C, can provide wired video output with adapters for the proprietary 30-pin dock connector (Apple 30-pin to VGA Adapter, Apple 30-pin Digital AV HDMI Adapter) and Lightning connector (Lightning to VGA Adapter, Lightning Digital AV HDMI Adapter).

  • The iPhone 4, 1st generation iPad and 4th generation iPod touch (devices with Apple A4 system-on-chip) will only display video, photos, presentations, and slideshows on a secondary display, and cannot mirror the entire screen.
  • The iPhone 4S, iPad 2, 1st generation iPad Mini and 5th generation iPod touch (devices with Apple A5 system-on-chip) are the first devices to support screen mirroring.
  • A teardown revealed the Lightning Digital AV Adapter contains an ARM system-on-chip (SoC) that decodes the output stream and sends it via HDMI. Currently, the maximum resolution supported is 1600 x 900.
  • Currently, the only iOS devices that use a USB-C port and support Alternate Mode are the iPad Pro (3rd generation and later) and the iPad Air (4th generation and later).
  • On iOS, major content service providers that allow screen mirroring on their apps include: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Tubi, Pluto TV, etc. (as of January 2021).
  • On iOS, some content service providers (especially paid cable TV subscription companies that also offer a traditional set-top box) have explicitly blocked screen mirroring on their apps. In such cases, the DRM restrictions implemented in the app would either block the video from playing or display a black screen with only audio playing. These apps include: ESPN, Now TV, All 4, My5, UKTV Play, etc. (as of January 2021).

HTC, Samsung, and Huawei support DisplayPort on most of their flagship phones in the HTC U series, Samsung Galaxy S series, Samsung Galaxy Note series, Huawei Mate series, and Huawei P series.

LG previously supported DisplayPort on its LG G series and LG V series phones but dropped support on the G6, G7, V35, and V40 phones. With the December 2018 software update, LG enabled DisplayPort output on G7, V35, and V40 phones.

Samsung's DeX mode, Huawei's Easy Projection, and Microsoft's Continuum allow phones to provide a PC-like experience. In addition to regular screen mirroring, they enable the use of apps in multiple windows with a desktop-like interface when connected to an external display with a keyboard and mouse.

The ROG Phone and Razer Phone gaming smartphones support DisplayPort. When the ROG Phone is connected to the Mobile Desktop Dock, it outputs 4K UHD video via HDMI and DisplayPort. Razer's Project Linda, a concept in development, allows a docked phone to power a laptop and run apps on a larger screen, with the phone acting as a trackpad or secondary screen for custom interfaces.

A bug introduced in Android Oreo caused performance issues (unreliable video/audio). This bug affects phones running stock Android (Razer Phone and Essential Phone) that updated from Android Nougat to Oreo.

The first beta of Android 10, released on March 13, 2019, introduced a native desktop mode, which is hidden by default in the final release. LG made modifications to enhance this desktop mode and integrated it into the LG V50 ThinQ and LG G8 ThinQ.

In November 2019, it was discovered through the Android source code that Google had explicitly blocked the DisplayPort feature in the Pixel 4.

On devices without native DisplayPort support, the DisplayLink Presenter app can provide limited screen mirroring capabilities when used with adapters and docking stations featuring DisplayLink chipsets. However, with a third-party solution, playback of HDCP-encrypted video content may be disabled.

In May 2020, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) released version 2.0 of the DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Alt Mode), which enables video output of up to 16K over USB 4 Type-C ports.

If your phone is not listed below, try using this IOS/Android-HDTV cable for connection. However, this cable can only mirror your mobile phone's screen. Other additional functions such as desktop mode, touchscreen, or keyboard will NOT work.
